Now we’re into August – commonly known in journalism as the ‘silly season’ because it’s holiday time so there’s not much news to report on, hence stories hitting the headlines that wouldn’t normally. But not here at The Hub Retail’s Weekly News Snippets. This week we’ve got another good mix for you: Christmas Shop Opens; Sports Direct compared to a Victorian workhouse; If you want healthy food, go to…Greggs!; and Job vacancies – 2 a penny.

Christmas Shop Opens: Yes, Selfridges has opened its Christmas shop. A bit of an outcry ensued with people feeling ‘it’s only August’. But there is a really good reason why. It’s for all the tourists that come over during the summer months, and really do want to stock up on their Christmas decs whilst over here. So it works for Selfridges. For those of us that live here permanently, it’s not something that holds the same allure. Especially with 141 shopping days to go!

Sports Direct compared to a Victorian workhouse:  It’s not only BHS and Sir Philip Green that has come under the cosh by a Parliamentary Select Committee. A report on Sports Direct employment practices has just been released, which includes a quote from Iain Wright, MP, chair of the Committee where he says ‘The evidence we heard points to a business whose working practices are closer to that of a Victorian workhouse than that of a modern, reputable high street retailer. For this to occur in the UK in 2016 is a serious indictment of the management of Sports Direct’. The company has responded saying that Mike Ashley has given assurances, and made changes. Let’s see if those changes go far enough.

If you want healthy food go to…Greggs!:  Greggs, more commonly known for its sausage rolls, is now selling a selection of healthy foods – and they’re going down a storm. It’s ‘Balanced Choice’ menu helped drive up sales by 6%. It says the increase has been helped by its new healthier offerings such as salads and sugar free drinks. Good for Greggs we say.

Job vacancies – 2 a penny: According to the research in this article, Brexit hasn’t adversely affected the job market, and that there are 2 jobs for every person looking for work. Apparently, in the 4 weeks since the EU referendum, job vacancies posted on the recruitment site Adzuna rose by 5.4%. Some good news – let’s hope it continues.
