THE HUB RETAIL RECRUITMENT’S WEEKLY NEWS SNIPPETS

Whilst today will – rightly so – be all about the Chilcot report on the Iraq war, here at The Hub Retail Recruitment’s Weekly News Snippets, we’ll be looking at other stories from the past week whilst the results of this long awaited inquiry unfold. So, here this week, you can read some stories that are related to Brexit – and some that are not!

Brett related stories that caught our eye: Many things are emerging post-Brexit. And will continue to do so over the coming weeks, months, and years. The other voting that started is for electing a new Prime Minister. Yesterday saw 5 being reduced to 3 yesterday. Whoever does get elected, it is an understatement to say that there is much for that person to do to ‘steady the horses’. But more people are saying that we must be calm and not talk ourselves into panicking. Such as the Sainsbury’s boss Mike Coupe who says we mustn’t whip ourselves into a recession. Standard & Poor’s agree – the credit rating agency predicts that whilst the next 2 years is going to be difficult, we will avoid a full-blown recession. Interestingly, some surprising in-sights are emerging, such as the one about bankers having to open their eyes to inequality. This goes to the heart of the huge discrepancies in voting between London, and in other parts of the country. For the first time, the City is having to realise that there is a world of difference in pay and standards of living in other parts of the country, and it is that which gave the surprise Brexit outcome. So some very interesting issues emerging – which the following articles set out very nicely.

Stories that caught our eye which are NOT Brexit related: We’re delighted to see that one of our clients, Carpetright, is going great guns with sales up by a third. It’s a company that’s spotted a very real opportunity of overhauling a somewhat downbeat image and riding high the growing home furnishing market, by rolling out a re-branding programme very successfully. On the National Minimum Wage front, we reported some weeks ago how retailers are cutting other benefits to make the savings necessary to pay the NMW – or in some cases as this article suggests, ignoring it all together. It’s another example of how a sound principle can become perverse because businesses have to find the money from somewhere. And finally, check out Dyson’s first ever High Street store – on Oxford Street! From the looks of it, the vacuum empire is giving more than a nod to an Apple store!

And finally, finally! We wish Wales the best of luck tonight in the Euro 16 semi-final against Portugal. The team’s success has been so heartwarming at a time when more than ever we are living in uncertain times. Come on Wales!
