THE HUB RETAIL RECRUITMENT’S WEEKLY NEWS SNIPPETS

On the eve of the EU referendum, The Hub Retail Recruitment posts its Wednesday News Snippets. But we’re going to avoid the subject – there’s nothing we can add to the plethora of claims and counter claims made by both sides – so we won’t even try! Rather, our stories this week are: Winners and losers on the High Street; John Lewis voted #1 by LinkedIn; and Apprenticeship Levy called into question.

Winners and losers on the High Street: more mixed results have been reported this week. Today it was confirmed that My Local is in administration. The company was sold just 9 months ago by Morrisons with the potential loss of 1700 jobs to be added to the fallout from BHS and Austin Reed. Morrisons however has said it will find jobs for as many any of its staff who transferred to the new owner last year as it can. Conversely, Joules sales have risen strongly, thanks to a very buoyant international market. Here’s two articles – one on My Local and the other about Joules.

John Lewis voted #1 by LinkedIn: John Lewis has hit the Number One slot for attracting and retaining talent in the UK, according to LinkedIn – whilst globally the top slot goes to Google. This article explains that LinkedIn used a matrix of actions from 433 million members – that’s quite a sample size!

Apprenticeship levy called into question: the Chartered Institute for People & Development (CIPD) has asked the Government to think again about the plans for the apprenticeship levy, in the light of the CIPDs research that suggests two thirds of employers would be forced to reduce investment in other areas of workforce development in order to meet the 0.5% of payroll that the current plans will require business to pay. This article not only explains the situation, but also has a link to its report.

Here at The Hub Retail Recruitment we’ll be issuing our full Monthly News Round next Wednesday. Will the dust have settled by then on the EU result? We’ll see. Until then, have a great week – and don’t forget to let us have your comments or thoughts on these news stories or any others that have caught your eye.
