THE HUB RETAIL RECRUITMENT’S WEEKLY NEWS SNIPPETS

As those of you who are avid followers of our weekly news snippets know, we publish on a Wednesday. But this week we’ve held back to find out the fate of BHS. So this week, our stories are: BHS – the loss of another High Street brand; Brexit and employment; and something a little lighter What do we like about our colleagues?

BHS – the loss of another High Street brand: along with Austin Reed, the administrators for BHS have failed to strike a deal with any of the potential buyers. The ins and outs of the finances are complicated, but those affected the most are of course the people who work there. 11,000 of them. How did it ever get to this, and why were the assets stripped? We’ll leave that to all the various post-mortems – and hope that these expose some lessons that won’t be repeated. It is of course another blow to our High Street, which seems to be ever diminishing. Here’s an article that reminds us of 10 retailers that – for those of us over a certain age – were our everyday retailers. We’ll all remember some of them – if not all. At The Hub Retail Recruitment we’re continuing to do our bit for the BHS staff.

Brexit and employment: here’s an objective and helpful article from the CIPD about what leaving the EU is likely to mean for employment. And apparently nothing, if anything very much, will change immediately. Certainly, there will be a two year period for the UK to negotiate new terms with the EU – but it’s likely that the EU will require the UK to abide by EU regulations, as it already does with Norway and Switzerland, in all trade arrangements. We’re pleased about that as at The Hub Retail Recruitment we’ve been worried about employment law in this country going back to the dark days of pre-discrimination protection, for instance. But we do know only too well that some of the EU regs have tied employers up in knots, so we would always advocate a balance. We’ve also been concerned that EU citizens would have problems working here – and let’s face it we’d be lost without them as they do all sorts of jobs for us, perhaps without us appreciating how much we rely on them.

What do we like about our colleagues? On a lighter note – but no less informative – is this recent research about what we value most in those we work with. Not surprisingly, optimism and enthusiasm were the top two. Have a read and see what the other 7 are. We certainly agree that there’s nothing worse than having miserable, negative, people working alongside you – they not only drag down the mood, but really undermine the culture and productivity of a company. And the research agrees!

That’s it for this week. We hope there’s better High Street news next time, but for now we wish everyone at BHS the best of luck for the future. We’ll be back here on our usual day, Wednesday, so make sure you look out for our Weekly News Snippets on 9th June.
