THE HUB RETAIL RECRUITMENT’S WEEKLY NEWS SNIPPETS

This week at The Hub Retail Recruitment, we bring you three stories from the array of the past seven days: HIGH STREET SALES STILL FALLING; SICK EXCUSES; TURBULENCE AT EASYJET.

HIGH STREET SALES STILL FALLING: April sales continued to drop by nearly another percentage point, with the cold snap not helping matters. Of course we all got caught out when temperatures last weekend soared to beat those on Ibiza, so hopefully May sales will be healthier. But the April figures show that the trend of spending less on goods and more on leisure and entertainment is continuing. The article below gives further details.

SICK EXCUSES: According to research by AXA PPP Healthcare, many of the reasons why we call in sick find little sympathy with our managers. Migraine sufferers come out worse, with the most accepted reason being flu – but even that’s at only 40%. And anyone suffering from a mental health issue is unlikely to tell their manager the real reason why they’re taking time off sick and will use a physical reason instead. This is really interesting research, and suggests that our bosses need to understand that staff are from time to time unwell and are better to take a little time off work to get well quickly rather than soldiering on and becoming worse.

TURBULENCE AT EASYJET: A mixed picture at Easyjet – on the one hand, the airline attracted 2million more customers in the last six months, and sales were up by 0.3%. But, profits took a steep dive, going from a £7m in the same six months last year down to a loss of £24m this year. Why? This is mainly due to a weak pound against the euro, and some effect caused by terrorist attacks in Egypt, Paris, and Brussels. It’s CEO believes that Easyjet is performing well in very difficult circumstances. Read more below.
