Another week has flown by – but here’s some top stories that have caught our attention over the last seven days here at The Hub Retail Recruitment: Co-op boss wants his pay cut; Britain’s retail bosses ‘not fit for purpose’; Inflation rises; LGBT graduates feel constrained in the workplace.
CO-OP BOSS WANT HIS PAY CUT: It’s not very often – if ever – any one of us would ask for a pay cut. But that’s exactly what Richard Pennycook, CEO of the Co-op Group has asked for. And a great whacking 60% cut! Mind you, that 60% reduction of £3.59m. Here’s an article that includes a view from the Institute of Directors applauding Mr Pennycook’s unusual request.
BRITAIN’S RETAIL BOSSES ‘NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE’: So says a report just published claiming that about a third of people heading up retail companies just don’t have the skills – particularly in the digital age. And it would appear that Sir Ian Cheshire – chairman of Debenhams and former boss of B & Q – agrees. Read all about it in this article.

INFLATION RISES: But only by 0.2% on the previous month. So it’s now at 0.5%, still significantly of the Government’s target of 2%. Interestingly, it was the 22.9% leap in air fares that caused it – which in turn was due to an early Easter. Read all about it in this article.

LGBT+: Here’s a really interesting – but worrying – statistic: 60% of LGBT+ people who are open about their sexual identity at university, feel they have to hide it when they join the workplace. You’ll find two very enlightening podcasts at this link. They provide food for thought for all employers serious about embracing diversity in the workplace. Just in case you didn’t know what LGBT stands for, its Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender – the ‘+’ includes all other sexual identities associated with the LGBT community.
