Ho Ho Ho. Only another 18 sleeps until Christmas. Getting on OK with your preparations? Or perhaps you’re like us here at The Hub Retail Recruitment where we’re waiting to see what further bargains are on offer over the next week or so. In the ad stakes, apparently John Lewis is winning the race on YouTube – with Burberry and Sainsbury’s coming 2nd and 3rd – what do you think?:

Other stories we’re bringing you this week are: Hampers – Aldi or Fortnum & Mason? Oasis & Warehouse in trouble; Trouble getting your online deliveries; Christmas parties – do you like them? and Fancy climbing a mountain to get a job?

Hampers – Aldi or Fortnum & Mason?: Apparently, it’s F & M all the way, despite a strong move from Aldi to offer an alternative that looks very similar, and has more in it for the price. But despite that, F & M’s hamper sales are up 20% on last year. Perhaps there’s just something special about having a basket with those iconic initials on it, rather than one that just looks similar but isn’t the genuine article. Which would you prefer? Here at The Hub Retail Recruitment, we’d stick with F & M for that special treat.

Oasis & Warehouse in trouble: It’s sad to report that another High Street retailer has gone into administration – this time it’s Aurora Group, which consists of Coast, Oasis and Warehouse. So, it’s in the hands of administrators PwC at the moment. But all is not lost as a number of investors are showing interest. It’s likely that the 3 retailers will be sold as the one Group, as all three share the same head office functions. Let’s hope a good acquisition is made and jobs are saved, as well as new life being breathed into the 3 brands.

Trouble getting your online deliveries: Apparently, those of us who are buying on-line this Christmas – and more of us are – we’ll spend an average of two and a half hours trying to sort out late deliveries, or damaged goods being delivered, or no delivery at all. We know how stressful it can be waiting for those deliveries, when, let’s face it, the deadline of 25 December just can’t be moved! We hope you get your on-line purchases on time and in good order.

Christmas parties – do you like them?: Some of us do, and some of us don’t. On the one hand, it’s an opportunity for us to get together with our colleagues for a party, and for our employers to show their appreciation for our hard work throughout the year, but on the other hand, we might not get on with our colleagues and would rather spend time with people that we like. How do you view your Christmas party?

Fancy climbing a mountain to get a job?: That’s what you had to do if you wanted to be a Director of Toughness for Columbia Sportswear – as well as overnight hiking and kayaking in addition to the more usual interview. Candidates from the US, UK, and Canada competed for these jobs. And one of the successful candidates was from the UK – a former semi-professional rugby player from Gloucester in fact. We wish him well in his new career – and congratulate him on succeeding in a very unusual process.

Well, that’s it for another week. Next Wednesday – 14 December – will be our penultimate Weekly Newsnippets for 2016. So make sure you’re back here for that – and in the meantime, have a great week.
